麦吉尔大学（McGill University）位于加拿大魁北克省蒙特利尔市，建立于1813年，其前身是由著名慈善家詹姆斯·麦吉尔（James McGill）捐赠成立的麦吉尔学院。1829年，蒙特利尔总医院的教学部并入麦吉尔学院，从此学校正式改名为麦吉尔大学（McGill University），并于同年正式开课。

尽管位于讲法语的魁北克省，但麦吉尔大学是以英语教学的大学，学生的母语以英语占大多数。麦吉尔大学一直是多伦多大学（University of Toronto）“加拿大第一名校”称号的最有力的挑战者，她与多伦多大学（University of Toronto），皇后大学（Queen's University）并称为加拿大的常青藤盟校。可惜由于60年代开始的魁北克独立运动，让加拿大其他省份的很多优秀学生裹足不前，蒙特利尔市逐渐失去了加拿大第一大城的光彩，麦吉尔大学也由于资金短缺，在近十年来的麦考林杂志大学排行榜上排名逐渐滑落，将加拿大第一的称号拱手送给了多伦多大学，甚至不敌皇后大学（Queen's University）和远在西岸的英属哥伦比亚大学（University of British Columbia），始终在三、四名间徘徊不前。不过从2003年开始，McGill的排名再次回升到了第二名。整体来讲，麦吉尔大学的综合实力还是非常强，她的教学及研究水准被认为可媲美美国长青藤8所大学，因此素有“加拿大哈佛”之称。麦吉尔大学和多伦多大学也是加拿大仅有的美国大学联盟的成员。另外，英属哥伦比亚大学（UBC），阿尔伯塔大学（University of Alberta）和维多利亚大学（University of Victoria）都曾经是McGill的分校，他们的校长都是麦吉尔大学的毕业生。
9 K% L  {1 J! H- D- J/ m( L. i医学是麦吉尔大学的传统强项，她拥有加拿大顶尖的医学院。其医学院培育出了很多优秀的毕业生，像是1977年诺贝尔生理学医学奖的获得者安德鲁·维克托·沙利（Andrew Victor Schally），1981年诺贝尔生理学医学奖的获得者戴维·休伯尔（David Hubel）等，直至今天，麦吉尔大学仍然在癌症、帕金森氏病、爱滋病等研究领域居于世界先进水平。麦吉尔大学所属的皇家维多利亚医院是加拿大最大的综合医院之一，也是我们熟悉的白求恩大夫曾经工作过的地方。同时McGill的法学院和HEC商学院也都堪称一流。: j/ B4 n$ }- Y

麦吉尔大学位于魁北克省的蒙特利尔市。蒙特利尔，坐落于渥太华河和圣劳伦斯河交汇处，是加拿大第二大城市，也是加拿大的金融和工商业中心，人口约360万。过去曾在很长时期内为加拿大的第一大城市，1967年举办过规模宏大的世界博览会，还承办过1976年的奥运会。 * d3 C2 ]( y0 x. ]9 X

校内: McGill has both traditional and alternative residences in downtown Montreal that collectively house approximately 2,400 undergraduate students. The traditional residences offer dormitory-style accommodation with full meal service provided by four cafeterias. Four co-ed residences are located on the slope of Mount Royal, overlooking the campus. A fifth is a converted high-rise hotel close to campus. One all-women’s residence, Royal Victoria College, is located by the lower campus. Annual cost: $9,872 - $11,770 per academic year (eight-month lease including mandatory meal plan).

McGill’s alternative residences also house first-year students and include one apartment building, facing the main campus, with fully equipped single and double occupancy apartments; a number of beautifully renovated older houses within a few blocks of the campus offer single and double occupancy bedrooms with shared kitchens and common areas; and Solin Hall, an award-winning factory conversion located just four short Metro stops west of the main campus, with two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments, large common areas and a computer lab. Annual cost: $5,929 - $8,838 (11-month lease, no meal plan).

Residence accommodation is guaranteed to newly admitted undergraduate students who are starting their first year of university studies, are admitted to the university by June 15, and who are 22 years of age or under. First-year undergraduate students of any age who receive major renewable entrance scholarships are further guaranteed that they will be assigned to the residence hall of their choice. All other residence rooms are assigned by lottery.9 v4 I. t' c, x5 B

校外: The downtown campus is centrally located on major subway and bus routes and in walking distance of many apartments. The Off Campus Housing Office provides on-line listings of apartments to rent or share in the vicinity of both campuses, as well as lots of friendly advice to help students in their housing search. Monthly rental ranges from shared rates starting at $350, to three bedrooms or larger for around $1,200.8 ?, I$ f" Z4 t+ z9 [' [& _
Note: Rents vary depending on the condition and location of the building. Close to the downtown campus housing can be expensive and difficult to find. Students on tight budgets should prepare to live a short commute from downtown.
